Vehicle Tracking and Telematics

How to Geofence one or more Vehicles

What is geofencing?

Geofencing is the ability to define a boundary around an area, so that an alarm is raised when a vehicle bound to that geofence crosses the boundary.

In the Seedrive Telematics application, the alarm will be raised on the screen, and also logged. The area can be defined directly on the telematics vehicle tracking map. Geofences can be set up graphically via the map, or manually through the Basic data management functions.

This article covers:

Note: You need to be authorized to access the geofencing facility: contact your service representative if you do not have access to this feature.

A: Graphically setting up a geofence using the map

Step 1:

Tip: before creating the geofence, obtain the vehicle plate number and e-Drive number for the vehicle(s) to be bound to the geofence. Tip: If you have a lot of vehicles to bind to the geofence, after creating the geofence, consider using the ‘Manage district’ option (in the Basic data menu) as defined below in the section on setting up a geofence manually. This will let you query, select and bind multiple vehicles at a time.

Navigate to the area to be geofenced on the map, select the ‘Map Moving’ menu at the top right, then select the ‘Draw a rectangle’ (or circle or polygraph) option:

Step 2:

Draw the rectangle on the screen by dragging your mouse across the area to be geofenced. On releasing the mouse button, the ‘Add geofence’ dialog box will be displayed.

Tip: Clicking ‘Clear’ in the dialog box will clear the geofence and return the map to its original state.

Step 3:

If you have additional vehicles to be geofenced, enter their details into the new (blank) ‘Bind geofence’ dialog box as above. Once all vehicles have been entered, press the ‘Clear’ button to exit the geofencing function.

B: Maintaining geofences

To report, modify or delete any geofence, click on the ‘Basic data’ menu on the left of the page, and a list of geofences will be displayed To see details, delete, or modify the geofence, click on the geofence to select it, and select the relevant option on the popup menu as shown:

The only option available on this screen is the ability to remove a vehicle from the geofence bind list, by clicking the vehicle and pressing the ‘Remove bind’ button

C: Manually setting up a geofence using the map

Step 1:

Select the ‘District management’ option in the ‘Basic data’ menu on the left of the page. This will display a list of all geofences. Click on the ‘Add’ button in the Data list section of the ‘District management tab’ (see above) to add a new geofence. Then fill in the details in the form that appears. Select the type of the map (the image below is for a Circular geofence) and also the bind mode. In the page below, Bind group is selected.

Enter a unique district name and the correct geographical coordinates (longitude, latitude and diameter), and click on the ‘Add’ button.

Once the geofence is saved, the list of current geofences will be displayed in the ‘District management’ page, with the new geofence added.

Step 2: Binding the vehicles to the geofence

On the ‘District management’ page, select the geofence to be maintained, and click the ‘Bind’ button on the popup menu that appears (refer above on how to navigate to here).

On the ‘Vehicle list’ page that appears, enter the search criteria, and ‘Query’ all or only unbound vehicles. A list of vehicles will appear.
Either double click on the vehicles you want to select, or else click on ‘Choose all’ to move the required vehicles to the ‘Vehicles chosen’ list.
